Job description

The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) has a dynamic focus on creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. The Faculty programmes emphasise sustainability, relevance and an engagement with the real world and connects actively with the dynamism, creativity and diversity of Johannesburg in promoting new approaches to design education, that supports the University’s vision. The Faculty and the Department of Industrial Design have excellent facilities and staff, and works closely with industry to ensure that its programmes remain relevant, and that students are empowered to deal with the constant change that characterises the highly competitive world of the creative professions.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be expected to be able to fulfil the responsibilities of an academic senior lecturer, which include:
Facilitating learning (teaching, assessment and the preparing of study material) in identified undergraduate and postgraduate modules in industrial design.
Executing administrative and/or management duties that support the academic project.
Improving and increasing personal knowledge through the conducting and publishing of accredited research and creative outputs relevant to the industrial design discipline on an on-going basis.
Contributing towards societal and professional community engagement that adds value to the profile of the individual, department and faculty.
Participating in faculty marketing initiatives.
Any other departmental or faculty related duties as required

Minimum requirements
Lecturer:

A Master’s degree in Industrial Design or a cognate discipline (NQF 9 or equivalent). Applicant needs to be willing to register for a doctoral qualification in Industrial Design or a cognate discipline (NQF 10 or equivalent)
Three to five years teaching and learning experience and/or professional industry or entrepreneurial experience.
In-depth and current industrial design skills and knowledge.

Senior Lecturer:

A doctoral qualification or registration for a doctoral qualification in Industrial Design or a cognate discipline (NQF 10 or equivalent).
Three to five years professional industry or entrepreneurial experience.
Three to five years’ relevant teaching and lecturing experience.
Three to five years’ relevant research experience, including community engagement
In-depth and current industrial design skills and knowledge.

Recommendations:

Five to ten years’ relevant professional industrial design experience.
Evidence of research and/or creative outputs.
Specialist skills or developed interests in product design, business, design studies, drawing, prototyping, digital media, and engineering for industrial design.

Competent in facilitating design and technical execution across a broad spectrum of industrial design projects.
Excellent English communication skills.
Good organising, planning, administrative and writing skills.
Strong interpersonal communication skills with students and colleagues.
Ability to monitor and coach student performance and provide critical feedback in an objective and professional manner.
Self-motivated.
The ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
